There is something incredibly special about the pop of a freshly sealed jar and the sweet, sharp aroma of boiling fruit. For me, it is a sound and smell that instantly transports me back in time to my mother's farmhouse kitchen, standing on a stool to watch the rolling boil of the season's harvest.

At Crafty Old Codger, I still make my preserves exactly the way we did back then. Whether it is a rich summer jam, a deeply savoury chutney, or a wonderfully sharp, bright yellow piccalilli (which is technically a mustard pickle, though it shares the pantry shelf perfectly with the chutneys!), every single jar is crafted by hand, with love, and with years of expertise poured into the mix.

Local Produce and Generous Friends

The secret to a truly spectacular preserve is the quality of the ingredients. You will not find any mass-produced, flavourless ingredients here. The fruit and vegetables that go into our jars are picked locally. They come straight from my own garden, the plots of surrounding allotments, nearby farms, and the surplus crops of incredibly generous friends.

Because we rely on what is fresh and growing around us, our flavours change with the seasons, ensuring you only get the absolute best of the current harvest.

The Small-Batch Difference

If you have ever wondered why our stock goes so quickly, it is because we strictly adhere to small-batch cooking. Large-scale companies often stockpile frozen fruit to manufacture jam year-round. We refuse to do that. We cook what is fresh, when it is fresh.

Cooking in small batches allows for complete control over the set, the flavour, and the texture. It is artisan, it is traditional, and it means that every jar has been carefully monitored from the chopping board to the sterilised glass.

However, this traditional method also means that our supplies are genuinely limited. When a certain flavour of jam or a batch of seasonal piccalilli is gone, it is truly gone until the next harvest.

Bring the Farmhouse Taste Home

Whether you are looking for the perfect chutney to pair with a mature cheddar, a sharp piccalilli for your cold meats, or a sweet, nostalgic jam for your morning toast, you can taste the dedication in every spoonful.

Get in touch via our contact page to see what seasonal delights we currently have in stock, but do not wait too long—once the batch is finished, the jars are empty!
